Happy Birthday Mo! (Mom, Mama, Girlfriend, Terri Girl, Mommy, Mama Boo)

Happy Birthday Mo! (Mom, Mama, Girlfriend, Terri Girl, Mommy, Mama Boo)

Sunday’s for me have been pretty peaceful over the years. I traditionally use this as a day to clean my home, do the laundry and watch movies I have been interested in. I will often take my dog for a walk or two, maybe go to the gym and just try to be quiet.

On a personal note:

For the past 37 years, I have celebrated my mom in a big way on her birthday. Any day with her was a celebration. I was able to celebrate last year, as well, by having our official grand opening on her birthday. Though she wasn’t here physically, she felt like she was here. It was the last date to check off on my year of firsts… her birthday.

This year, I have been pretty sad; and, even more-so with my mom’s birthday coming up (today). I think about her several times a day when I just want someone to talk to. I would call her to tell her absolutely anything: about the vegetation, the animals, work, school, or anything in between.

Around the age of 16, right before I got my drivers license - or maybe, right after, my mom let me know we could be friends. She let me know that, with me driving, she had to trust that her and my fathers teachings were good enough for me to make good decisions. At that moment, she would have to trust that I was going where I said I was going to do what I said I was going to do.

When my mom died, or maybe, right before, my brother told me that he realized I had talked to her, likely, every day of my life. He was sad that “my person” was gone. Unfortunately for me, my husband had died 10 months prior. Thus, my assigned person was gone and my chosen person wasn’t there to help me through it. To say it’s been hard is a vast understatement. She, however, would want me to keep living. And, I try my best to do that every day.

What’s been happening lately?

We have been trying to find the right groove for our brick and mortar. We really want it to be a destination place for the community to utilize for their micro events from meetings to baby showers, select birthday parties to art showcases.

We were blessed to have some visitors come by recently as a part of the international funding conference. It is always fun to talk about how Terri’s came to be with support from those that believed in us enough to pour into us financially through grants and loans. I was able to see an old friend (colleague) that moved on from one “CDFI” to another in New York. He worked with me diligently, in the beginning, for several phases of the Motor City Match program. He moved before we finished completely and was excited to see “the final project”.

In the coming weeks, we will host some cake decorating classes for Jack & Jill and Girl Scouts. We will host a community meeting for the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department. We also have some small business owners renting the space for classes to teach lotion making and calligraphy. We will have Small Business Saturday pop up shops, as well. We look forward to hosting some “Friendsgiving” parties again this year, too. If you are interested in booking our space, you may always do that on our website.

What’s Next?

We plan to release some fun options for holiday treats; beginning with Halloween, continuing to winter holidays, jumping into the New Year and landing on Valentine’s Day. Is there anything in particular you would like to see?

Thank you for reading Sunday Morning Laundry.

See you next Sunday!
